Who is Nicoy Guevarra?
You have a very confusing name. Are you a boy or a girl?
Nicoy is actually my nickname from childhood which I am more commonly known not only with family and friends but also from my work. I don’t really use an avatar name (except when playing videogames) so you could say this is also my Nom de Plume. It is also the name you’ll be seeing in the credits of some of the AAA games I was involved in the production when I was still working as both an animator and production supervisor in an outsource animation company I used to work with..
And just to get the record straight: I am a lady. 🙂 I’m always confused as a lad because of the name.
Where are you from? Where do you work?
I’m from Cavite, Philippines, “Home of the Revolution!” And I’m a proud Caviteno.
When I was in college and during my employment years I lived in Manila for more than 10 years. I came home in 2012 and has been working in our home office which I share with my husband.
10 years since college? Husband? How old are you?
You don’t ask a lady her age. 😝 But to give you an idea I was born in the 80’s and has been married since 2011.
I learned from the previous company that I worked on that, for me that is, employment doesn’t secure my future. I guess that’s the world we live in right now. That I can’t become what I want when I’m just following other people around, which in this case are my bosses. But I did learned a lot from them. So when my previous employer shifts business back in 2012 that’s when I decided to go Freelance. Back then I’m still getting majority of my work from them then slowly building other client relationships thru various freelance platform such as Upwork (oDesk back then) and Guru I also get jobs from Deviantart and ConceptArt. I’m really thankful for all the clients I met. It was a continuous learning experience.
Tools of Trade
What is your primary tool for your work?
I’m mainly a digital artist so a computer is my primary tool along with a pen tablet.
Desktop or Laptop?
Laptop. It was originally my husband because my old laptop just died down. Problem with a power source. Now I’m using MSI QL62 6QD
2009 or probaly 2010 model Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch. Hopefully in the future I can get myself a Cintiq. Or a Mobile Studio 😀
What software(s) do you use?
For my digital illustrations and designs:
- Clip Studio Paint Pro (got it at 80% discount) Watch out for that. It’s really worth it.
- Adobe Photoshop CS6 for final editing and layouts
For my vectors (and sometimes simple animations)
- Adobe Flash CS6
- Adobe Illustrator
To keep track of my references/documents
- Evernote (which I also have on my tablet)
If you need to chat with me (please refer to my Contacts)
Aside from your work, what else do you do?
When I was a kid drawing has been my hobby and now it became my work. What remained are playing videogames and reading manga. Both has been very influential to my artwork as you can see. What also remained was my love for Gunpla but pursued doing snapbuilds starting 2013. I don’t really customize, paint or whatever… because I can’t yet or not confident to do so. But when the time comes I would like to do enhancements on them but keep their original look because I’m like a fan of the series as well. I’m a UC era fan by the way.
Then this 2015 I learned how to knit and crochet. It was my frustration before as I don’t really get it but with help from Youtube Tutorials I was able to start working on Scarfs then now Amigurumis.
What grade of gunpla do you build?
We opt for Master Grade builds. “We”, I mean me and my husband. We do builds together. We like the MG because it is beautiful on it’s own, even without the paint. The price is also just right so we don’t get tempted to buy too much. (It’s a sort of a reward for both of us.) We have a few HG because there’s no MG available like the Pscho Gundam Mk.1 and probably in the future Neo Zeong and Dendrobium (this one was my 2nd favorite gundam) Also we have the 90’s version of (when printed) F91 Gundam HG 1/100 in scale which is still on display here till today. SD gundams are also a part of our collection along with a few gashapons. 😀
What kind of tools do you use for you knitting and crochet
I have Susan Bates set of crochet hooks from USF5 to USK10.5 (UK 3.75mm to 5.50mm). But I also recently bought a size 8 hook. I also have a Susan Bates size 5mm Tunisian/Afgran Hook which is so hard to find locally. Thankfully I was able to get one from Gantsilyo.com. As for my knitting I just have a basic size 5 bamboo knitting sticks and a Addi Steel 5.5mm cable needles.
For my Yarn, I’m kind of like anything goes but I prefer Red Heart brands because they’re soft and for Amigurumis they have small packs which cost Php15.00 each (less than $1)
